Clinical Thermometer

Clinical thermometers are designed to measure body temperature of human being. Clinical thermometer generally have probes which are either inserted into mouth, rectum or under the armpit. Depending upon the technology used they are further classified into:

  • Mercury in Glass Thermometer: Mercury in glass thermometers are thermometers consisting of mercury contained in a bulb at the bottom of a graduated sealed glass capillary tube marked in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit. It uses electronic circuit to measure the resistance and then converts it into temperature readings. Digital thermometers are faster than mercury thermometer
  • Basal thermometer: A basal thermometer is highly sensitive thermometer that measures temperature changes more closely than a regular thermometer. A basal thermometer is a thermometer used to take the basal body temperature (lowest temperature attained by the body usually during sleep)
  • Infrared thermometer: An infrared thermometer is a thermometer which infers temperature from a portion of the thermal radiation emitted by the object being measured. These thermometers are restricted to use in the ear or along the forehead to determine overall body temperature. Ear thermometers will have a probe which is to be inserted for a few seconds to take a reading. Forehead thermometers are only to be used when you suspect you are getting an inaccurate reading from another thermometer. These thermometers will give you a general screening, but will not give solid results if you require specifics.
